Sizes and weights

Common diameters are 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25 and 32 mm, in 12 m lengths; 6, 28, 36 and 40 mm are also rolled. Weight per metre is d x d / 162 kg - so 12 mm is 0.889 kg/m and a 12 m bar about 10.7 kg. The full table is in the TMT bar weight chart.

What to put in a TMT inquiry

Grade (for example Fe 500D) and the standard IS 1786.
Size-wise quantity in tonnes - 8, 10, 12, 16 mm and so on.
Preferred makes, or "any BIS-licensed make".
Delivery site, required date and whether unloading is included.
Billing basis: weighbridge weight or theoretical weight.
Payment terms and whether you need the mill test certificate (MTC) with each lot.

Most residential designs in India use Fe 500 or Fe 500D. In seismic zones designers often specify Fe 500D for its extra ductility. Use the grade written on your structural drawings.

What is the standard length of a TMT bar?

TMT bars are normally supplied in 12 m lengths. Other lengths can be cut to order.
