Mild steel (MS) angles are L-shaped sections used in towers, sheds, frames and supports. They are sold by the tonne, but the rate changes with the section size, thickness, grade, length and delivery point. This page explains how an angle quote is built and how to check the tonnage you are buying.
An angle is written as leg x leg x thickness in millimetres. Equal angles have both legs the same, for example 50 x 50 x 6; unequal angles have different legs, for example 75 x 50 x 6. Dimensions follow IS 808 and the steel is normally to IS 2062 (E250 for general work). Mills roll standard lengths, and cut lengths cost extra.

For a quick check, an equal or unequal angle weighs about (leg A + leg B - thickness) x thickness x 0.00785 kg per metre (all in mm). This ignores the small root radius, so the published section weight is usually a little higher.

Use (leg A + leg B - thickness) x thickness x 0.00785 for an approximate weight in kg per metre, with all sizes in mm. A 50 x 50 x 6 angle works out to about 4.4 kg per metre.
An equal angle has both legs the same length (for example 50 x 50); an unequal angle has one longer leg (for example 75 x 50). Unequal angles are used where one face must carry more load or fit a wider member.
Section dimensions follow IS 808, and the steel is usually IS 2062 - E250 for most general structural work.
