I-beams and H-beams carry the main loads in industrial sheds, multi-storey frames, bridges and mezzanines. They are heavy, expensive per piece and often needed on a schedule, so it pays to get several verified quotes at once.

Sections follow IS 808 (or IS 12778 for parallel-flange beams) and the steel is IS 2062 - E250 for general work, E350 where the design needs it.
Beams are sold by the tonne on the section weight per metre (kg/m) times length, or on the weighbridge. Weight charts found online often disagree, and IS 808 has been revised, so ask each seller to state the kg/m he is billing and compare quotes on the same figure. A quick cross-check is area (cm2) x 0.785 = kg/m.

ISMB flanges are tapered; NPB (narrow parallel beam) flanges have constant thickness, which makes bolting and welding easier. NPB sizes follow IS 12778 / European profiles.
