Hot rolled (HR) coil is the base flat product of the steel industry - it is cut into sheets and plates, slit into strips for pipes, or cold rolled further. Its price is quoted per tonne, but the final number depends on grade, thickness, width, form and where it is delivered. Here is how an HR coil quote is built.
| Form | What it is | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| HR coil | Hot rolled strip wound into a coil, sold by weight | Re-rollers, pipe makers, service centres |
| HR sheet | Coil cut to length - flat pieces in thinner gauges | Fabrication, panels, enclosures |
| HR plate | Thicker flat product, from coil or a plate mill | Structures, tanks, machinery bases |
| HRPO (pickled and oiled) | HR coil with the mill scale removed and oiled | Pressing, forming, auto parts |
| Chequered plate | HR plate with a raised pattern | Flooring, stairs, platforms |
Most structural HR coil, sheet and plate in India is supplied to IS 2062. The grade is written as E plus the minimum yield strength in N/mm2 and a quality letter - for example E250 BR or E350 BR. E250 is the common general-purpose grade; higher grades such as E350 cost more. Other standards appear for special uses: IS 10748 for HR strip used to make welded tubes, and IS 1079 for HR sheet and strip meant for cold forming.
| Part of the quote | What to check |
|---|---|
| Basic rate (Rs/MT) | For which grade, thickness and width band |
| Thickness extra | Thin gauges usually cost more per tonne |
| Width / cut-length extra | Non-standard widths, slitting or cut-to-length charged separately |
| Grade extra | E350 and special grades over E250 |
| Freight | Ex-works / ex-yard or FOR your site |
| GST | 18% (HSN 7208 for widths of 600 mm and more; 7211 below 600 mm) |
| Landed cost | Rate per tonne delivered, all extras included |
A steel plate weighs length (m) x width (m) x thickness (mm) x 7.85 kg. A 2,500 x 1,250 mm sheet of 6 mm therefore weighs 2.5 x 1.25 x 6 x 7.85 = about 147 kg. Use the steel weight calculator to check pieces against tonnes before you order.
On Indian Steel Portal you float one inquiry for HR coils, sheets or plates - grade, sizes, quantity, preferred makes, delivery city and payment terms. KYC-verified mills, stockists and traders quote against it in a live reverse auction with a minimum decrement and a soft-close, ranked L1 to L4 on landed cost. You award L1 or any ranked bidder, and the deal note - with GST, MTC and weighment terms - is generated for both sides.
Float an HR coil inquiry - freeHR coils and sheets categoryHR coil is quoted in rupees per tonne as a basic rate for a grade, thickness and width band, plus extras, freight and 18% GST. There is no single all-India figure; float your requirement on the portal to get live landed quotes.
Hot rolled flat products of non-alloy steel 600 mm or wider fall under HSN 7208; narrower ones under 7211. Both attract 18% GST.
They are IS 2062 grades. E250 has a minimum yield strength of 250 N/mm2 and is the general structural grade; E350 has 350 N/mm2 and is used where higher strength allows lighter sections. E350 usually carries a grade extra.
Hot rolled, pickled and oiled - HR coil whose surface scale has been removed with acid and then oiled to prevent rust. It is used where a clean surface is needed for pressing or painting.
Multiply length in metres by width in metres by thickness in millimetres by 7.85. The answer is in kilograms.
